The “White Box” – A White Tea Sampler The 9th edition of the Clubbox @ Siam Tea Shop – SiamTeas Clubbox No.9 – is a “White Box”. As such, it offers a representative cross-section of the world of white tea. Accordingly, the spectrum ranges from the Fuding Silver Needle and Pai Mu Tan Chinese white tea classics to 2 types of “White Moonlight” tea from ancient tea trees in Yunnan, respectively Northern Vietnam to a particularly rare silver needle tea from Laos’ Bolaven Plateau to an Artisan White Peony of “Ebony Springs” Tea Garden in Sri Lanka. click picture to enlarge The June ClubBox 2022 (“White Box”) offers 20g each of the following: 1. Fuding Silver Needle White Tea Fuding Silver Needle (also: White Hair Silver Needle, Baihao Yinzhen 白 毫 银 针) White Tea. And here’s to the original from Fuding County, Fujian province, China – often imitated, never reached… First spring picking (“first flush”) of only the young buds from the Fuding native “Da Bai” tea plant variety. 2. White Peony / Pai Mu Tan / Bai Mu Dan White Peony (Bai Mu Dan) White tea from Fuding county, Fujian Province, China. This is a perfectly balanced white tea, consisting of a masterfully harmonious traditional hand-picked white shoots with their corresponding top two tea leaves. Full-bodied, nutty taste body with fruity, slightly earthy and woody components. This in turn is preceded by an aromatic bouquet of floral notes awakening a connotation of spring flowers. 3. Ancient Snow Shan Trang White Moonlight Tea Ancient Snow Shan Trang White Moonlight Tea (spring picking) from 100 years-old Tuyet Shan (“Snow High Mountain”) tea trees in north Vietnam. Our local producer partner’s tea garden locates at 1400 meters in Ha Giang’s Tai Con Linh mountain range. Here, cultivation still takes place in a natural way that is actually close to “wild”. This way, the tea trees benefit from the input and the regulating mechanisms of a biodiverse environment. A pronounced almond note on the gum combines with intense sweetness to a taste of finest marzipan. 4. Yunnan Ancient Tree White Moonlight Tea Ancient Tree White Moonlight Tea – rare white tea specialty from Yunnan, China. The tea is picked with 1 2 picking standard during full moon periods in March/April each year from natural-grown ancient tea trees and processed according to a centuries-old family tradition. In terms of taste, White Moonlight Tea combines the elegance of a white tea whith a high share of buds with the wealth and depth of natural-grown ancient tea trees. 5. Bolaven Silver Cloud White Silver Needle Bolaven Silver Cloud is a white silver needle tea (picking standard: pure buds) from south Laos. The seed-raised, up to over 70 years old tea trees grow in a semi-wild, biodiverse tea garden near Phonsavan on Bolaven-Plateau. The processing to a true artisan tea is mainly done by hand. At this, the light roasting that is rather untypical for white teas distincts Röstung Bolaven Silver Cloud both from Fuding white “silver needle” teas and from Yunnan “White Moonlight Buds” – also in taste! 6. Ebony Springs White Peony Ebony Springs White Peony is a “1 2” picking standard white tea from Bernard Holsinger’s Ebony Springs Tea Garden. In the teas full-bodied, equally intense and harmonious taste profile, pronounced sweetness elegantly envelops a complex composition of floral, wood and earthy notes. The crystal-clear, amber-colored cup resulting from the infusion beguiles the senses with a pleasantly vegetal bouquet and a thick, oily texture that gives a touch of luxury to every sip.
