Description Bhakanje First Flush 2025 – Schwarzer Tee aus Nepal A spring tea rarity from Bhakanje Tea Garden – traditionally crafted, deep in color and character Bhakanje First Flush 2025 is a hand-picked black tea from the early spring harvest in April. It comes from the high-altitude Bhakanje Tea Garden, located over 2,000 meters above sea level in Solu Khumbu District, at the southern edge of the Himalayas. The tea is processed right where it grows – at the Bhakanje Tea Factory, a small, farmer-driven tea workshop founded as part of the Denmark-based Himalayan Project. What makes this tea so special is its rare, classic processing method. While most spring harvests in Nepal and Darjeeling today are crafted as green or lightly oxidized teas, Bhakanje First Flush follows a different path. It is made as a fully oxidized black tea – in the style that used to be common for spring teas from the southern Himalayan region. The liquor glows a deep, dark red in the cup. On the palate, the tea is full-bodied and complex. Malty depth meets fruity notes, rounded off by a gentle hint of muscatel. Its soft, silky texture carries the layered flavors gracefully into the finish. A rare delight for those who miss the traditional black teas of the southern Himalayan region.. Picking and Processing Only the youngest shoots are used for this tea: one tender bud and the two leaves beneath, carefully hand-plucked following the 2 1 standard. The leaves are then fully oxidized, which gives them their dark appearance and rich depth of flavor. This traditional process preserves and amplifies the tea’s natural aromatic spectrum. The result is a well-balanced black tea with malty and floral tones, carried by a subtle natural sweetness and smooth mouthfeel. The extreme altitude, pure Himalayan air, and mineral-rich soils provide ideal conditions for the slow, concentrated growth of tea plants. This results in a uniquely expressive flavor profile. The gardens are home to both traditional Himalayan varietals and selected Chinese cultivars, well adapted to the rugged mountain climate. The untouched nature of this highland terroir lends its unmistakable character to every infusion. It provides smallholder farmers in remote Solu Khumbu, Nepal, with a sustainable source of income through high-mountain tea cultivation. Key initiators include Kurt Lomborg and Janaki Khadka of the Himalayan Project. They work in partnership with Pernille Kruse Madsen of the Human Practice Foundation to promote local prosperity in one of Nepal’s poorest regions. Kurt Lomborg and Janaki Khadka of the Himalayan Project are in charge of the project on location The project launched the Bhakanje Tea Factory in 2019 and expanded it steadily in the years that followed. Today, the factory processes tea leaves from dozens of small-scale farmers into high-quality teas, while also improving regional infrastructure. With its focus on natural farming methods, the project strengthens local well-being and ensures the highest quality standards. Many of the farmers are co-owners of the factory – so every cup of Bhakanje tea directly benefits the community that produces it. Bhakanje Tea Song and Video – Visualizing and Audiotizing the Magic of Bhakanje A collaboration between the tea farmers of Bhakanje and the Himalayan project has meanwhile yielded a promotional song and video dedicated to Bhakanje tea. Listening to it, it becomes obvious that the resulting “Bhakanje Tea Song” is much more than just another ad soundtrack. Much rather, the song itself is a rare gem of musical art, capturing both the natural sereneness and cultural rootedness of Bhakanje tea in a truly soulful way. At the same time, both dimensions are visualized with unique footage of Bhakanje village and the panoramic highlands surrounding it. As an additional plus, the video depicts the complete artisanal production cycle of Bhakanje tea. And finally, while marveling at the beauty of Bhankanje and watching one of the world’s best black teas come about, the song starts digging deep into your ear and soul, possessing all it takes to become a proverbial earworm. As such, its melody and theme will accompany and soothe you through the further course of your day. But listen and see for yourself!
